NEW MEMBER ORIENTATION

Welcome to the IAM Family! Your ministry matters! Below is important information that IAM provides for your ministry to flourish.

Welcome to International Association of Ministries (IAM). The following material is designed to give you the information you will need to move forward as a member. It covers most of what you need to know in ministry with IAM. We are honored to partner with you. As we journey together with Christ in this work remember three essential things.

1) YOU MATTER.... "Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows." Hebrews 10:29-31

2) YOUR MINISTRY MATTERS.... "For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them." Ephesians 2:10

3) YOU WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE.... "So let's not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don't give up." Galatians 6:9

You may be asked for the federal EIN# number which verifies our/your nonprofit status. The EIN # 95-4023564.
How to verify your status with IAM: as a DBA. When you receive your welcome letter from Dan Pantano, our Secretary, it contains a public statement of your DBA status with IAM. Copy it and keep it for your records.

IAM is committed to pursue the highest legal and ethical standards in our accounting. The IAM board has secured the services of an outside bookkeeping company, to handle and administer all IAM funds and the QED Tax Service; to prepare annual tax and accountability records and requirements. Our corporate calendar year ends June 30th each year. We are required to oversee and supervise our various programs and leadership. The financial elements of your ministry are supervised by QED Tax Service for this purpose. Additionally, IAM requires members and licensed affiliates to submit annual reports summarizing their ministry activities. You will receive an email in May each year that includes an outline of questions. Please submit your annual report by June 28th each year.

Our annual IAM Family Dinner, usually in November, accomplishes two things:

  1. We gather as a family to meet, celebrate and build new relationships with members.
  2. We evidence yet another example of oversight.

You will receive an email invite each year. Please make this a priority on your annual calendar.

A Partnership for Today's Christian Leaders

Introduction
Community Partners are Christians in the Marketplace who see their work as a calling from God. Their goal is to advance the kingdom and to work with IAM Ministries to advance the cause of Christ.

The Community Partners program is designed to fuel a new level of partnership between Christians in business and community charities.

Our three fold missional objective is:

  1. To advance the cause of Christ by using every available means to support local need meeting, hurt healing, hope building ministries.
  2. To elevate and celebrate the strategic role of Community Partners in the call of God.
  3. To create and nourish a true and practical partnership between our Community Partners and ministries committed to this mission.

Our Strategy
We ask Community Partners to pray for and financially support IAM's mission. We ask IAM members and their Ministry Teams* to pray for and support our Community Partners. IAM will honor this partnership by allocating funds to ministries whose teams support our Community Partners.

Should you become a licensed minister?..... Probably!

"Gods calling is not just for church pastors... We are all full-time Christians. We are all called to full time ministry, and there is no higher calling than God's calling on our lives."  -Dave Harrison
The place and approach to ministry varies. You don't preach, sing, or take offerings in a business, but your staff and customers need a level of ministryand discipleship none-the-less.
If your sphere of service is a "Parachurch" or other nonprofit, a Ministry License may open doors to greater impact and growth. As a licensed minister you will have additional choices to serve, in marriages, funerals, communion, baptism, Chaplaincy, pastoral counseling, and more. If you are receiving an income from your nonprofit work, you may qualify for significant Tax benefits.
Being recognized as well prepared and trained to work with the spiritual needs of people in your circle of influence adds an important element to your opportunities and credibility as a leader.
For these reasons and more, if your in a nonprofit working with people in need, and/or with volunteers, or staff, if you receive an income and your work presents opportunities to be a spiritual mentor, becoming a licensed minister is very useful.

Check out more information on IAM's licensing process here.

If you are a Licensed Minister earning an income through your ministry, you qualify
for a “Housing Allowance” Tax benefit.

Housing allowance reduces your income tax by not being included in your wages for taxable income. However, if you are still in social security, the housing allowance is included in the calculation for the self-employment tax.

What is included in housing allowance benefit for ministers?
You can include home or rent payments, utilities and property taxes. For example:  if your housing cost is $2,000 a month/ $24,000 yearly and your utilities are $300 a month/$3,600 yearly, your annual housing allowance would be $27,600. You will need to verify this with receipts at tax time.

What happens if I over or under estimate the actual costs?
You can take the lessor of both. If you underestimate, and the actual costs were $29,000, you still get the original requested amount. If you over estimate and the actual cost was $26,000, you can apply only that amount.

Important to remember, only income earned from your nonprofit ministry with IAM is allowable for tax benefited housing allowance. IAM members in this category must request Housing Allowance annually by the end of November (No later).

Make your requested amount to the “IAM Board of Directors” and send it to me via email. If you want to know more about how the ministerial housing allowance works, contact Dave at iamdaveharrison@gmail.com

Should you opt out of Social Security as a Minister?

Opting out of Social Security is a serious step, not to be taken lightly.

  1. Check with your CPA. laws change and your accountant is, or can be up to date on them.
  2. Some kind of Social Security benefit will likely be available when you retire regardless of current government issues, so opting out because you don’t trust the future of the system may not be the best approach.
  3. If you fully opted out of social security, especially at a young age, you may not qualify for Medicare when you retire.
  4. The “opt out” option is for religious/conscious reasons, not financial. Read carefully the statements you are claiming before you decide.
  5. Only income earned from ministry counts for this Social Security option. If you earn income from other than ministry purposes, you will pay S.S., however, if you do earn from other than ministry employment you can also benefit from S.S. if you hit a life time threshold by retirement.
  6. If you are older at the time you opt out, it is likely you are vested. In this case your taxable income from ministry may be greatly reduced by opting out of S.S (Even more so if you qualify for housing allowance) plus you receive all the benefits of S.S., including Medicare.
  7. You must be a licensed minister to qualify. (Warning: do not rely on shortcut, “buy your ministers license here...” programs, you may be vetted and those licenses are not accepted.)
  8. God willing, most of you reading this will eventually retire from active full-time ministry. If you plan well and save for retirement, you can continue to receive tax advantaged income (Including Housing Allowance) throughout your retirement years.

Once again, it is important that you consult with your tax accountant to determine the best approach for you and your family. If you don’t have a qualified CPA to inform your decisions, you can contact QED Tax Service: (916)784-7686.

Where your “Fair Share” goes...

As you know, there are costs to every well-run program. Your fair share of these costs is based on the Biblical concept of portions. Every ministry is different in terms of revenue. Rather than setting a specific amount, we have chosen the tithe concept of scripture. 10% of your gross revenue is dedicated to the cost of ministry provided by IAM. The breakdown of costs is as follows:

  • 5% (50%) goes to CPA services
  • 4% (40%) goes to liability insurances and annual IRS reporting requirements
  • 1% (10%) is discretionary - We use this to supplement annual dinners and other needs as they come up.

Proportional giving

Newer ministries called of God, but not yet financially prosperous, require the same administrative costs other more mature ministries require. By allocating 10% from all members you have the opportunity to help new ministries get started and grow as you once did.

All donations and revenue given to our ministries fall under IAM’s nonprofit status and is accounted for and administered under the supervision and direction of its Board of Directors. The Board is committed to insuring funds donated to the ministry you direct are used consistent with our mission, values, and legal requirements, as well as, your ministry needs.

In the event you effectively leave the ministry and/or IAM, remaining funds
set aside for your ministry work as part of IAM will be directed to other projects/ministries. In the event you form your own 501(c)3 nonprofit ministry (and that new nonprofit ministry is consistent with IAM’s mission and standards) the board will consider transferring all remaining funds to that new entity.

What if a donor wants to change their monthly giving amount?

From time to time, members of your ministry team will decide to change the monthly amount they contribute. They have two options:

  1. They can use the "Set Up Account Now" link at the bottom of their emailed receipt from "InternationalAssoc.ofMinistersandMinistries@givingfuel.com" called "Donation Confirmation To [Your Ministry Name]". They can follow the prompts to create password and claim their donations.
  2. You can email Ingridbooks2020@gmail.com with the donors name, last 4 digits of their card used, and the new amount they want to contribute.
